Rotary is the service club of choice for many prominent leaders in the worlds of business, the professions, the arts, government and other disciplines. It’s the oldest and most prestigious service club in the World with an unparalleled reputation for community service.
In an increasingly complex world, Rotary provides one of the most basic human needs – friendship and social interaction. It’s one of the two reasons Rotary was born in 1905.
3. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
This is the second reason Rotary was established. Everyone needs to network. Rotary consists of a cross-section of the business community. Its members come from all walks of life. Rotarians help one another and collectively help others.
4. ASSOCIATION WITH NICE PEOPLE.
Rotarians adhere to the view that while it is nice to be important, it is more important to be nice.
5. OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE
Rotary’s business is mankind; our product is community service – at the local, regional and international levels. One of the most compelling reasons our members become Rotarians is the chance to do something meaningful for those less fortunate.
6. PERSONAL GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT.
Membership in Rotary enhances one’s self knowledge, understanding of human relationships and personal development.
7. DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIAL SKILLS.
Rotary events and functions also help to develop one’s interpersonal communication and social skills. Rotary is for people who like people.
8. PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS.
Many an individual who joined Rotary was afraid to speak in public. Rotary involvement helps develop confidence and skill in public speaking.
9. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT.
Rotary is an organisation of leaders. Serving in Rotary positions is like a college education in Leadership; learning how to plan, motivate and manage.
10. CITIZENSHIP IN THE COMMUNITY.
Rotary membership makes one a better community participant. The average Rotary club is comprised of the most active citizens in the community.
11. CITIZENSHIP IN THE WORLD.
Every Rotarian wears a pin that says “Rotary International” and every Rotarian is welcome to attend any one of over 30,000 Clubs in 194 nations. Instant friends and like-minded contacts in one’s own community and in communities around the world.
12. CULTURAL AWARENESS.
Practically every religion, culture, race, creed, political persuasion, language, colour and ethnic identity is found in Rotary. Rotarians are aware of , and accept, cultural differences; and this enables them work with, and assist, people all around the World.
13. ABSENCE OF AN “OFFICIAL CREED”.
Rotary has no secret handshake, no secret policy, no official creed, no secret meetings or rituals.
14. INTEGRITY & ETHICS.
Rotarians are expected to be ethical in business and in their personal relationships. Our 4-Way Test asks of the things we say and do “is it the truth; is it fair to all concerned; will it build goodwill and better relationships; will it be beneficial to all concerned”.
15. PROMOTES VOCATIONAL SKILLS.
Rotarians represent their professions and are encouraged to take part in the promotion of their profession or vocation, both within and outside of Rotary – this includes serving on relevant committees and teaching our youth about their chosen vocation.
16. FAMILY PROGRAMS.
Rotary provides one of the world’s largest youth exchange programs; sponsors local high school and college interest groups for future Rotarians; and a host of activities designed to assist family members in the growth and development of family values.
17. REAL WORLD EDUCATION.
Our weekly guest-speaker program is designed to keep you informed on what’s happening in the community and beyond. Different speakers, different topics.
18. ASSISTANCE WHEN TRAVELLING.
Because Rotary clubs operate in most countries around the World, any travelling Rotarian who has need of a doctor, lawyer, hotel, dentist, local advice, etc. will usually find the service and introductions they need quickly through Rotary.
Rotary clubs run social events and activities which provide a welcome diversion in one’s everyday business life. Rotary conferences, conventions and assemblies also include entertainment – in addition to information, education and networking.
Last but not least, Rotary is fun. Our meetings are fun. Club projects are fun. Our social activities are always fun, and our community service activities are conducted in a fun way.
